Humpty Dumpty - A Metaphor for Peace

The modern version of the nursery rhyme is...
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again
Humpty Dumpty is a metaphor for peace.

We build instruments of war as a deterrent, so that we may preserve peace. In medieval times you built castles to hold onto key pieces of land. In addition these castles were there to protect the peasants that worked the land. This is the part of the poem where Humpty is sitting on the wall. We've deluded ourselves into believing that peace can be preserved through the preparation for war.

Ironically this deterrent system actually pushes us into preemptive strikes. We convince ourselves that the other side is going to attack and in order to save lives, we need to attack first. Humpty, peace, is broken through this war preparation. The engine of war having been revved by both sides is unleashed.

The third line represents the war itself. Who fights this war, the king's horses and men. All their fighting is in vain as the peace, as they knew it, can never be put back together. People will die, animals will be slaughtered and farms will be burned.

Anthem Songs

Most of the music I play is upbeat in general but nothing tops a good anthem song. A nice beat, catchy lyrics and at least a small amount of replay-ability. Today I found a new song that fits into this niche for me, 'We Are Young' by Fun. I'm going to include the official music video, more for the sound than anything else as I don't care much for the video.

Exact Change

Most recently this happened to me at Tim Hortons. I order a coffee, muffin and bottle of water, it comes to $4.74. I reach into my wallet to find, not the oh so convenient five but, a bunch of twenties. As an aside a flush wallet in itself  always brightens my day. Before the cashier comes back with my order I remember I have a bunch of change in my coat pocket. I'm pretty sure I can scrounge up three quarters to ease the breaking of a beloved twenty. I reach in and grab some coins. When I reveal my first catch, it usually takes a couple to get the right combination, there are: two quarters, two dimes, four pennies and nothing else. I pulled out exact change, when that included four pennies! I pretty much hit the holy grail of finding change. I felt a little bit of sadness as I passed over the twenty and change to the cashier. This was a moment worth remembering and it was gone as quickly as it had come. The coffee was a little bitterer that day. How could it taste as sweet as the memorable change it had been bartered for? Till next time perfect handful of money, till next time.
